When Professional Floristry Becomes Emotional (and why)

Weddings hinge on trust. You trust your bakery to bake a delicious and beautiful cake. You trust your seamstress to tailor your dress or suit perfectly. You trust your planner to keep the day running smoothly and to put out fires. You trust your cousin to act right. You trust your maid of honor to help you lift your dress so you can pee.

And, you trust your florist to deliver on your vision.

There is so much that goes into creating a bridal bouquet. The ideation, the ingredients, the time, the meaning behind every bloom. This is a bouquet that people will look back at in photographs for decades.

The pressure is there.

How does the pressure ramp up when I’m creating a bouquet for someone I know and love?

Recently, someone I work with, love, and respect got married. This person is a true partner and a steady presence in the wild, chaotic life of professional floristry. She has my full trust, and for her wedding, she trusted me with her bouquet.

When I’m creating a bouquet for someone I know, the flavor of anxiety and stress is different than if I were working with a regular client. To be completely vulnerable, this bouquet was one of the most challenging floral projects I’ve done in a long time, because I was so afraid to disappoint. This was such an important event!

There was no brief or inspiration photos, just a color palette and trust. I got to work with a huge batch of ingredients, a lot of coffee, even more anxiety, and ended up spending three hours working on the bridal bouquet. When I tell you the pressure was on…

There were two iterations of the bouquet before I got to the final product, and I provided two different boutonnières for the groom to choose from as well.

On the delivery day, my hands were shaking. When you work with flowers all day, every day, there are certain liberties you feel comfortable taking with your floral design. But for this, I was hyper-aware of every choice I made.

Thank goodness, truly-- my friend loved her bouquet.

At the end of the day, the stress and anxiety were worth it because I did something challenging, and because this person I adore was happy.

Will I have the guts to take on a project this close to my heart ever again? We’ll see…
